Ryan and Angela’s Dual Landscapes

Moving to Oregon (we live in Clackamas) and it’s mild climate opens up a world of possibilities for your garden.  Instead of having a garden full of plants that you’d find on the east coast, or the more commonly found Asian themed gardens in our area, we decided to go for something more bold and exciting.

Our front yard has an extremely hot southwest aspect that has allowed us to use many drought adapted plants like the Mediterranean fan palm that requires little water or maintenance.  Pairing these with plants like Oleander, yuccas and olive trees give our garden a climate-wise, Mediterranean feel.

Our backyard is more protected, shadier and better at retaining moisture.  Here we have created a jungle themed garden using Trachycarpus palms, Sabal palms as well as bananas and many other large leafed subtropical plants.  This gives us a wonderful exotic and private escape from everyday life.

On our 1/4 acre suburban lot we are currently growing 25 species of palm trees with around 100 plants in total.
